Uproar in the Sauerland: "Combination" by Lars Breuer in six municipalities
Bestwig. Consensus - contrast, communication - controversy, coalition - conflict: these and other pairs of words are part of the work "Combination", which Cologne artist Lars Breuer created on behalf of the aufruhr municipalities - including the district and university town of Meschede and the municipality of Bestwig. The six municipalities in which the works will be on display from September have also been newly combined. As part of the municipal reorganisation 50 years ago, they were put together from different districts and at the same time became elements of a new district, which is also a combination.
It is also connections that play a central role in Breuer's works. Connections between pairs of words, which in turn are closely linked to the place where they are shown. Lars Breuer selected the following locations for "Kombination":
"Consensus - Contrast": Auferstehungskirche Arnsberg, 14 September, 3 p.m. (opening with artist talk), until 23 November
"Communication - Controversy": at Bestwig Town Hall and on the flue gas chimneys at Steinberg, Ostwig, and at Bastenberg, Ramsbeck, 21 September to 31 October
"Coalition - Conflict": Museum Haus Hövener Brilon, 21 September to 18 January, daily except Mondays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Collision - Composition": Lenneatelier Schmallenberg, 20 December to 18 January, open Fridays and Saturdays from 2 to 5 pm

The inter-communal cooperation project will kick off with a round table discussion with Lars Breuer and others on Sunday, 21 September at 6.00 pm on Kaiser-Otto-Platz in Meschede. The joint closing event will take place on Sunday, 18 January at 11.00 a.m. in the Lenneatelier in Schmallenberg.
Lars Breuer's work is characterised by a wide range of reference points and interests. Among other things, the artist deals with space and its historical-social function. Wall paintings with self-designed typography often form the central technique for making references to socio-cultural themes, literature or art history. His large-scale, text-based paintings often take on the function of transforming the space into a new coherent and rhythmic overall impression.
Lars Breuer is Professor of Design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences and lives and works in Cologne.
