Third start for the Bergklosterlauf
Bestwig. All good things come in threes: after the first two successful Bergkloster runs in 2023 and 2024, the running department of TuS Velmede-Bestwig is organising the third edition of this redesigned running event on Sunday, 28 September 2025 in cooperation with the facilities of the Bergkloster Bestwig. The registration portal is already open.
From 10.30 a.m., TuS will once again be offering running routes over six, ten and 21 kilometres. Walkers are also welcome on the ten-kilometre route. The children's races over 700 metres, 1400 metres and 2100 metres will take place on the grounds of the Bergkloster. All other starts take place on the citizens' sports field at the little railway, directly below the monastery. The 10 km run as well as the children's and youth races are also scoring runs for the Volksbank Sauerland Laufcup of the LAC Veltins Hochsauerland. 100 volunteers from TuS Velmede-Bestwig will once again be on duty.
"At the first two races, the cooperation with the Bergkloster was a win-win situation for both sides," says a delighted Udo Barg from the TuS Velmede-Bestwig running department. The trainee physiotherapists from the training academy for therapy professions will once again be offering free massages to all athletes after the competitions. "This is also a valuable practical experience for the trainees," say academy directors Melanie Scheeren and Nicole Einwohlt. In the school centre where the academy has its premises, there are also shower facilities in addition to the massage offer.
Trainee nursery teachers from the vocational college offer childcare from 10 am to around 1 pm. Parents with younger children will be happy to take advantage of this offer. There will also be another face-painting event. At the first two Bergkloster runs, numerous children took to the course with colourfully painted faces. "In addition, many of our prospective sports graduates help with the organisation of the run. Many pupils are also motivated to take part," announced Head of School Markus Hester.
Of course, there will be plenty of refreshments on offer. In the school cafeteria, the running department of TuS Velmede-Bestwig will be offering a large cake buffet. The Bergkloster kitchen is organising a barbecue stand in the schoolyard. There will also be live music. Spectators and guests are very welcome in this area. The provincial superior of the Sisters of St Mary Magdalene Postel, Sister Johanna Guthoff, explains: "We are an open monastery and look forward to welcoming the athletes and guests."
Well-organised daily routine
From 8.30 a.m., runners can pick up their race numbers, get changed and drop off their luggage at the Bergkloster vocational college in Bestwig. There are almost 200 parking spaces at the Bergkloster. "At the same time, the Bergkloster is easily accessible by bus and train. The walk there from the train station is only 500 metres," emphasises Udo Barg from the TuS running department. The monastery also offers overnight accommodation for those travelling from further afield.
All participants are invited to a church service in the monastery church at 9am. The starts will take place from 10.30 a.m. on the citizens' sports field at the little railway below the monastery. This is also only 500 metres as the crow flies from the starting number distribution point. Runners should plan a ten-minute walk to get there.
The 6 and 10-kilometre routes lead past Valme and Elpe, across fields and through deciduous forest. They are relatively flat. The half marathon route is more challenging with 300 metres of ascent. This 21-kilometre route leads up to the district of Andreasberg. There are refreshment points along the way. The finishes all take place at the mountain monastery. The first finishers of the 10-kilometre run are expected shortly after eleven o'clock. The children's races start at 12 noon.

Online registrations are now possible via the "raceresult" portal. All information on logistics, fees and the programme can be found on the website www.bergklosterlauf.de. TuS-Velmede Bestwig is once again looking forward to several hundred participants, just like in 2023 and 2024.
