New regulation: plastic in organic waste will not be emptied in future

New rules have applied to the disposal of biowaste since 1 May. This is because the amendment to the Biowaste Ordinance (BioAbfV) came into force. The aim is to reduce the amount of plastics, especially microplastics, and other foreign substances in the organic waste bin. The municipality of Bestwig is making its citizens aware of this.

This is because the new Biowaste Ordinance introduces stricter regulations for both the sorting of biowaste and its further treatment in terms of the circular economy. The aim is to improve the quality of recycling in composting and fermentation plants to produce organic compost and biogas. The organic waste bins may therefore only be filled with organic waste - as was already stipulated in the waste disposal statutes of the municipality of Bestwig.

However, if organic waste bins are filled incorrectly, they will no longer be emptied by the contracted waste disposal company - in the municipality of Bestwig as well as in other municipalities. Even small quantities of plastic, such as plastic collection bags - i.e. typical tear-off bags on rolls - and shopping bags, flower pots or coffee capsules and milk jugs are regarded as incorrect waste - and result in the bins being left empty. Likewise, food wrapped in plastic film, cans, glass and waste wood, as well as hygiene articles such as nappies, do not belong in the organic waste bin - nor do clothes.

However, the organic waste bin is the right place to dispose of vegetable waste and fruit peelings, food waste, meat (cooked only), coffee grounds and filters, eggshells and tea bags - and of course tree, shrub and lawn cuttings and leaves. If you want to pack such organic waste, you should never use plastic bags. Alternatives are standard paper bags or newspaper in which organic waste can be wrapped. Important: So-called "compostable plastic bags" are also not allowed in the organic waste bin - because they do not fully decompose in the composting plant, they have to be sorted out by hand.

The municipality of Bestwig therefore appeals to all citizens to ensure that their organic waste bins are filled correctly.
