Fountain built: Climate-friendly cycling and drinking water

Bestwig. Cycle, take a break, tap water - without any disposable plastic: this is now possible for locals and guests in the municipality of Bestwig at another location on the Ruhr Valley cycle path: in Hennenohl in Velmede, the municipality of Bestwig has put the first real drinking water fountain into operation in the centre of the town on the renaturalised Ruhr. Freely accessible, free of charge and with seating to take a breather.

Cyclists and anyone who is thirsty can tap and enjoy drinking water free of charge at the drinking water dispenser. Your own bottle can be topped up in no time at all at the touch of a button. An ideal place for all thirsty people (especially those travelling on the cycle path) to relax on the banks of the Ruhr and refresh themselves with natural drinking water.

The new drinking water dispenser complements the existing free (refill) filling stations in the municipal area: Flair Hotel Nieder in Ostwig, Bergkloster Bestwig, Hochsauerlandwasser GmbH based in the town hall, the tourist information centre at the railway station and Hotel Waldhaus Föckinghausen.

Background: The Ruhr Valley Cycle Route is the first long-distance cycle route in Germany to be water-friendly - and this also applies to the route that runs through the municipality of Bestwig. This is made possible by the cooperation with the association a tip: tap e.V., which has been campaigning for the consumption of tap water for years. Anyone travelling along the route can now fill up their water bottle easily and free of charge with fresh tap water at many stations. Whether drinking fountain or refill point - no one will go thirsty here.

And the best thing is: if you regularly top up your bottle when you're out and about, you're not only doing something good for yourself, but also for the environment. Because less plastic and CO₂ means: more sustainability, more enjoyment of nature - and simply a good feeling.
