Collecting kilometres on two wheels: "City cycling" in the municipality of Bestwig

Inflate the tyres, check the brakes and lights, oil the chain and perhaps charge the battery. Two-wheeler fans can prepare their bikes for a special event: The municipality of Bestwig is taking part in "City Cycling" from 1 to 21 June. All citizens can take part - and show that two wheels can be a real alternative to four.

This is the aim of the city cycling programme, in which the Hochsauerland district and all of its twelve municipalities are taking part: To make it clear that cycling is a great means of transport for work, life and leisure. "Cycling is not only environmentally friendly and sustainable - it's also great fun," says Mayor Ralf Péus, who will be leading a mayoral ride as part of the city cycling programme. Specifically, the aim is to collect as many kilometres by bike as possible for the municipality of Bestwig during the three-week campaign period - whether privately, professionally or for sport. This works via the free city cycling app, which can be downloaded from the usual app stores. The distances travelled are tracked via GPS - alternatively, this can also be done online via the kilometre diary.

"It doesn't matter where you cycle," emphasises Mayor Péus. Whether at home, on the way to work or on holiday: climate protection and cycling do not end at the municipal boundary. Participants are invited to register in a group at www.stadtradeln.de/registrieren before starting. In the municipality of Bestwig, there is currently an open group called "offenes Team-Bestwig", in which all citizens can register. Of course, other groups can also be created.

There will also be special activities in the municipality of Bestwig during the cycling campaign period. Throughout the entire period, there will be a picture search: the principle of the picture search is simple: image clippings with motifs from the municipality of Bestwig will be published on the homepage www.bestwig.de and in the social media on Facebook and Instagram as well as on the municipality's own WhatsApp channel. Participants can guess these locations - and cycle there, taking a photo of their own bike in the image section they have guessed. The photos can be sent by email to stadtradeln@bestwig.de by Sunday, 22 June at the latest. The municipality of Bestwig will raffle off great prizes among all the correct entries. Participation is free of charge; legal recourse is excluded. Following the competition, the best photos will be published on the Bestwig municipal website.

On Friday, 13 June, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., a driver safety training course will be held at the Schützenplatz in Velmede in cooperation with the police road safety officer. A safe driving course will be set up.

The city cycling event will conclude with the mayor's ride on Tuesday, 17 June, from 4.30 pm. Mayor Ralf Péus and representatives from the municipal council and administration invite all citizens to take part. The tour starts at the town hall.

At the end of the campaign period, there will be awards for the cyclists who have covered the most kilometres by bike. So it's worth taking part. Further information is also available online at www.stadtradeln.de/bestwig.
